The Church of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, now Toruń’s cathedral, grew with the medieval city and served its leading parish community.
Copernicus was traditionally associated with the church through baptism, though specific surviving objects such as fonts must be treated with appropriate caution about later identification.
The huge bell known as Tuba Dei dates from 1500, within Copernicus’s lifetime.
Brick Gothic dominates because northern European builders often lacked abundant high-quality building stone and developed sophisticated brick architecture for churches, gates and civic buildings.
