Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Toruń on 19 February 1473. The museum occupies two late-Gothic merchant houses associated with the Copernicus family.
Be cautious with the phrase “the exact birthplace”. The family owned property in this area, and museum interpretation reconstructs a late-medieval merchant household, but assigning one precise room to a fifteenth-century birth exceeds the surviving evidence.
Copernicus’s father was a merchant; his mother came from the prominent Watzenrode family. That background gave the future astronomer access to education and church patronage.
He later studied in Kraków and Italy and worked as a canon in Warmia. His heliocentric model was the product of a European scholarly career, not a childhood revelation beside a Toruń window.
Great thinkers usually require several institutions and at least one relative willing to finance the education.
