The Teutonic Order established Toruń in the thirteenth century during its expansion into Prussia. The castle housed the Order’s local command.
But Toruń’s relationship with the knights did not remain obedient. As the merchant town grew wealthier, civic interests increasingly conflicted with the Order. In 1454 townspeople captured and dismantled much of the castle during the uprising of the Prussian Confederation.
The ruins therefore commemorate not only Teutonic power but its rejection by the city it helped found.
After the Thirteen Years’ War, Toruń became part of Royal Prussia under the Polish Crown while retaining substantial privileges.
