Toruń’s enormous Gothic town hall reflects the confidence of a wealthy merchant community. It combined administrative, judicial and commercial functions in the centre of the market square.
Membership in Hanseatic networks connected Toruń to Baltic and North Sea trade. The Vistula brought grain and other goods from the Polish hinterland toward the Baltic.
Urban privilege created a political class capable of negotiating with rulers and challenging the Teutonic Order.
The town hall’s scale is therefore not decorative municipal vanity — though it is also that. It is an architectural claim that civic government matters.
Medieval merchants liked self-government for many of the same reasons modern businesses like predictable regulation: especially when they had helped write it.
