University of Wrocław and Aula Leopoldina

The university originated as a Jesuit academy founded by Habsburg Emperor Leopold I in 1702. The spectacular Aula Leopoldina still advertises Catholic Habsburg confidence in Baroque form.

After Prussia conquered most of Silesia in the eighteenth century, the institutional landscape changed. In 1811 the university was reorganised through a merger with the Protestant university at Frankfurt an der Oder, creating a major Prussian university in Breslau.

That sequence is useful because it breaks another simple story. The same institution can be Habsburg-Catholic in origin, Prussian in later structure, German in language for generations and Polish after 1945.

University traditions like to imply continuity. Administrations like to imply clean reforms. Real institutions are experts at surviving by changing the letterhead.

From here we move into a part of Breslau’s history that neither post-war German nostalgia nor Polish recovery narratives should be allowed to marginalise.
