The remains at Alto da Cividade belong to a Roman public thermal complex associated with ancient Bracara Augusta. Current municipal interpretation dates major construction to the early imperial period, with later remodelling and use into late antiquity.
The complex included cold, warm and hot rooms, hypocaust heating and exercise space. Nearby archaeology has also revealed a Roman theatre.
Baths were not luxurious extras. They were civic infrastructure where hygiene, leisure, business and status mixed.
Bracara Augusta became an important administrative centre in Roman Gallaecia. That means Braga’s urban history begins inside an imperial network long before Portuguese identity existed.
Empires are easier to remember through triumphal arches. Heated floors are a more persuasive demonstration of administrative capacity.
