Braga Cathedral — the Sé — became one of the central institutions of medieval northern Portugal. Its fabric contains Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Baroque phases because powerful churches rarely stop building when architectural fashion changes.
Braga’s archbishops claimed primatial status within the Iberian church and played important roles in the politics surrounding the emergence of Portugal.
The cathedral’s importance predates the kingdom as a sovereign institution, but avoid the devotional claim that Braga’s diocese was definitively founded by an apostle in the first century. Early Christian tradition and secure documentary history are not the same category.
The phrase “older than Portugal” therefore works best institutionally, not magically. A bishop’s seat and Christian community existed here before a Portuguese state.
The cathedral survived because every generation found reasons to renovate the argument.
