Gualdim Pais, master of the Portuguese Templars, began the castle at Tomar in 1160 as part of a frontier network created during the expansion of the Portuguese kingdom. Its walls and internal organization drew on military experience but should not be romanticized as a direct copy of one “Holy Land castle.”
The Templars were suppressed internationally in the early fourteenth century. In Portugal, much of their property and personnel were reorganized under the new Order of Christ.
That institutional continuity explains why Tomar did not become an abandoned Templar relic. The complex kept receiving money, functions and political attention under a different legal identity.
