The star-shaped Alba Carolina Citadel was constructed in the early eighteenth century after Habsburg forces consolidated control of Transylvania. Bastions and angled walls followed the logic of artillery warfare: eliminate blind spots and expose attackers to overlapping fire.
The builders did not choose empty ground. The fortress overlaid earlier medieval defences and the site of Roman Apulum. Large-scale construction also required enormous labour from the surrounding population.
The result is a military landscape that advertises imperial order while physically burying parts of the regimes that came before it.
