Bishop Ignác Batthyány founded the Batthyaneum at the end of the eighteenth century, creating a library and scholarly institution in a former Trinitarian church. Its collections include medieval manuscripts, early printed books and scientific material.
The foundation belongs to an Enlightenment world in which elite clergy could support astronomy, cataloguing and historical scholarship alongside religious office.
The library is especially important because books move differently from buildings. Manuscripts gathered here may have been produced far from Alba Iulia. The institution turned the city into a repository of intellectual networks much wider than Transylvania.
