The Union Hall is associated with the 1 December 1918 assembly at Alba Iulia, where representatives voted for the union of Transylvania with Romania after the collapse of Austria-Hungary. The event became foundational to modern Romanian national memory and 1 December is now Romania’s national day.
The political context was complex: the end of empire opened competing national projects across a multiethnic region, and later international treaties formalized new borders.
The hall should therefore be understood both as the site of a major Romanian political decision and as part of a broader, contested reordering of Central Europe after the First World War.
