The Romanian Orthodox Coronation Cathedral was built rapidly after the First World War and became the setting for the 1922 coronation ceremonies of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie as rulers of an enlarged Romania.
Its architecture deliberately evokes older Romanian Orthodox forms, making the new building look rooted in a deeper tradition. That is an important distinction: the cathedral is not medieval. It is twentieth-century state architecture using historical language.
Placed close to the older Roman Catholic cathedral, it also makes changing political representation visible. Two major churches on the same plateau speak to different institutional and national moments.
