The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Michael preserves major medieval phases and is one of Transylvania’s most important ecclesiastical buildings. Its Romanesque and Gothic fabric predates the Habsburg bastions that now surround it.
The cathedral served the Catholic diocese and contains tombs connected with Transylvanian political elites, including members of the Hunyadi family. That long institutional life crossed periods when the region’s confessional balance changed dramatically after the Reformation.
The building therefore resists any simple national label. It belongs to a medieval Latin Christian network whose political context changed repeatedly while the bishopric and monument endured.
