Liberty Square changed function with regime.
During Ottoman rule, this area belonged to the commercial and religious centre, with bazaar, bath and mosque nearby. After the Habsburg conquest, the old city was largely replaced by a planned fortress. The square became a military space for assemblies and parades.
Its later names tracked politics as well: Weapons Square, Prince Eugen Square and, during the revolutionary era of 1848, Liberty Square.
That sequence is more revealing than any one monument. Urban space is reusable political infrastructure. A place designed for market exchange can become a parade ground, then a civic square.
Timișoara’s centre feels coherent because eighteenth-century planning imposed order after conquest. The coherence itself is therefore evidence of rupture.
