Union Square was laid out as part of the eighteenth-century Habsburg reconstruction of Timișoara.
Its unusually large dimensions created a ceremonial Baroque centre inside the fortress. Around it stood the Roman Catholic cathedral, Serbian Orthodox cathedral, administrative palace and substantial town houses.
That arrangement is often described as multicultural, which is true but incomplete. The Habsburg monarchy actively organised religious and ethnic communities within an imperial administrative system. Coexistence occurred inside structures of privilege, regulation and colonisation.
The square’s architecture expresses that order. Symmetry, façades and institutions made imperial authority visible in daily urban life.
Union Square is therefore not simply a collection of colourful buildings. It is an eighteenth-century political diagram built at city scale.
