Construction of St Elisabeth Cathedral began in the late fourteenth century and continued through several campaigns. Its scale reflects Košice’s status as a prosperous royal town in the Kingdom of Hungary, not simply local religious devotion.
The high altar preserves a large cycle of Gothic painted panels, while later fires, earthquakes and restorations changed the building repeatedly. In the nineteenth century, major restoration reshaped parts of what visitors now read as “medieval.”
The cathedral is therefore both authentic survival and restoration history. It demonstrates how a wealthy trading city invested in architecture that placed it within the western Gothic cultural sphere.
