Urban Tower stands beside the cathedral as part of Košice’s central Gothic ensemble. Its primary function was practical: bells regulated religious and civic time across a city where few people possessed personal clocks.

The tower suffered fires and later rebuilding. A severe twentieth-century fire again required reconstruction, reminding visitors that apparently ancient landmarks can contain extensive modern intervention.

The name honours Saint Urban, traditionally associated with winegrowers. Košice’s region had important wine connections, especially through trade routes toward Tokaj. The tower therefore links sacred sound with the commercial geography that helped sustain the city.
