On January 2, 1900, engineers opened the completed Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal connection that allowed the river system to flow away from Lake Michigan toward the Des Plaines River.
The famous phrase is that Chicago reversed its river.
The real system is more complicated.
Smaller diversion efforts had influenced river flow for decades.
The 1900 canal made the reversal far more powerful and reliable by creating a deeper artificial channel and controlling the hydraulic gradient.
Water from Lake Michigan could be drawn through the Chicago River and sent southwest.
Sewage went with it.
The project required excavation on an extraordinary scale.
Workers cut through glacial material and bedrock. Rail systems moved spoil. Control works regulated flow.
The canal also improved navigation between the Great Lakes and Mississippi systems.
Sanitation and commerce shared one megaproject.
Missouri sued Illinois, arguing Chicago's sewage threatened St. Louis's water supply. The Supreme Court did not ultimately stop the project, but the conflict shows the regional stakes.
A city cannot change a watershed boundary without affecting other places.
Modern wastewater treatment changed the sanitation logic significantly, but the reversed watershed remains.
