These reconstructed huts represent thousands of soldiers whose names are mostly forgotten.
The Continental Army built hundreds of shelters here during the winter encampment.
It is tempting to tell the story only as heroic suffering. The reality was more complicated. The army had administrative failures, supply problems and political disagreements.
Yet soldiers stayed.
The huts remind us that history is not only about leaders. It is also about ordinary people making difficult choices under extraordinary circumstances.
