Natural Bridge is another place where the name misleads. Geologically, it is an arch because it was opened through a wall of rock by weathering and erosion rather than carved directly by a stream flowing beneath it.
The opening developed along fractures in the Claron Formation. Frost wedging and chemical weathering enlarged weak zones until a window formed.
The distinction between bridge and arch may sound pedantic, but classification helps reconstruct process. Landforms that look similar can have different origins.
The feature also shows the hoodoo sequence at a different stage. Walls develop windows; windows enlarge; roofs collapse; isolated remnants remain. What visitors call separate attractions are often moments in one continuous erosional story.
