Savannah’s squares and shaded streets are beautiful, but beauty is only the surface of a city shaped by Yamacraw diplomacy, colonial planning, slavery, cotton, Black religious life, Civil War occupation and twentieth-century preservation. This guide uses the celebrated urban fabric without romanticizing the economy that paid for much of it or repeating the legend that Sherman spared Savannah simply because it was pretty.
