Colonial Park Cemetery served Savannah from the eighteenth century into the nineteenth and contains thousands of burials. It is also a magnet for ghost stories, many of which are entertaining and very difficult to verify.
Treat the haunting material as folklore, not evidence. The documented history is dramatic enough. Epidemics repeatedly struck port cities like Savannah, where yellow fever and other diseases could kill quickly before germ theory explained transmission.
The cemetery was also affected by war, redevelopment and later restoration. Gravestones have been moved, damaged and rearranged over time, so a stone’s current position does not always guarantee that the person named beneath it lies directly below.
This matters because cemeteries are often presented as untouched archives. They are managed landscapes, vulnerable to weather, conflict, vandalism and changing ideas about preservation.
Savannah’s famous ghost economy tells us something real about the modern city: difficult histories are often repackaged as entertainment. That does not make every legend false, but it changes the standard of proof.
If a guide says a ghost definitely scratches visitors at midnight, ask for evidence. If the cemetery records epidemic mortality and centuries of burial practice, the evidence is already under your feet.
