The castle above the Danube served rulers and administrators because it commanded both the city and river route. Its changing architecture reflects repeated rebuilding rather than one intact medieval phase.
From here, Linz’s geography becomes obvious: river, bridge approaches and urban core are tightly compressed. Political control and transport control naturally converged on this height.
