The Nibelungen Bridge is inseparable from Linz under National Socialism. Hitler, who had personal ties to the region, imagined Linz as a monumental “Führerstadt.” The bridge formed part of a much larger programme of urban transformation that also included industry and housing.
Many grand plans remained unrealised, but the regime permanently changed the city. Infrastructure can look politically neutral after enough time passes; this bridge is a reminder that roads and monumental axes can also be ideological projects.
