Linz’s giant steel complex grew from the Hermann Göring Works founded under National Socialism. Wartime production relied in part on forced labour and prisoners, making the site a place where industrial achievement and exploitation must be discussed together.
After 1945, the works were nationalised and became a cornerstone of Austrian industrial recovery, later evolving into voestalpine. The same industrial landscape therefore contains dictatorship, forced labour, postwar prosperity and global engineering.
