Opened in 1986, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is not an old immigrant garden preserved from the nineteenth century. It is a modern cultural project built with traditional design principles and collaboration involving artisans from Suzhou.
That distinction makes it more interesting, not less.
The garden reflects a period when Vancouver's Chinese Canadian community sought greater public recognition after decades of exclusion. It also connects Chinatown to wider Chinese political history through Sun Yat-sen, who had supporters among overseas Chinese communities.
Heritage can be created deliberately by a living community rather than merely inherited.
The useful question is not “How old is it?” but “Why did people choose to build this in 1986?” The answer is about cultural confidence, recognition and Chinatown asserting that its future matters as much as its past.
