The Wing Sang Building is one of Chinatown's oldest surviving structures and is closely associated with merchant Yip Sang, whose business interests included labour contracting, trade and remittances.
Yip Sang's story illustrates both opportunity and constraint. Chinese entrepreneurs built complex trans-Pacific businesses while operating inside a society that legally discriminated against them.
The building now houses the Chinese Canadian Museum, turning a commercial structure into a national memory institution.
For decades, mainstream Canadian history often treated Chinese exclusion as a side story. Museums and community scholarship have moved it toward the centre, where it belongs.
The railway, mining, forestry, fisheries and urban commerce all relied on Chinese labour and enterprise. The contribution was never marginal. Only the recognition was.
