Despite the familiar name, Girona’s “Arab Baths” were built in the twelfth century under Christian rule. Their layout drew on Roman and Islamic bathing traditions, especially the sequence of changing temperatures and the elegant central pool beneath a small dome.
The label is therefore useful only if explained. The building is not evidence that a surviving Muslim bathhouse was simply preserved here. It shows how architectural ideas cross political and religious frontiers.
Later the baths became part of a Capuchin convent before restoration returned them to public view. One structure carried hygiene, monastic reuse and heritage interpretation in different eras.
