Sant Pere de Galligants is a Romanesque Benedictine monastery whose church and cloister survive close to the old city wall. Its sculpted capitals and compact plan reveal a religious institution that once controlled property and routine, not merely a picturesque cloister.
After monastic life ended, the complex eventually became the Girona branch of the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia. That change is particularly fitting: a medieval building now houses objects from much older societies.
The museum function asks visitors to separate container from contents. The monastery tells one history; the collections displayed inside may tell prehistoric, Iberian or Roman stories from across the region.
