The Basilica of Sant Feliu was Girona’s principal church before the cathedral took its later form. Its location near the northern approach to the old city and its association with early Christian martyrs gave it deep religious prestige.
The present building mixes Romanesque, Gothic and later work, including a distinctive bell tower. Inside, early Christian and Roman sarcophagi connect the site to funerary traditions much older than the visible Gothic fabric.
Sant Feliu is useful because it prevents the cathedral from monopolizing Girona’s religious history. Medieval cities could contain several powerful sacred institutions with overlapping but distinct communities and functions.
