D-Day is often compressed into the morning of 6 June 1944. The Battle of Normandy Museum focuses on what followed: weeks of fighting through bocage, towns and road networks before German forces were pushed east.
Bayeux was liberated on 7 June and became an important logistical and administrative centre. Nearby Caen, by contrast, endured prolonged fighting and devastating bombing.
That difference prevents a tidy liberation narrative. Landing on the coast was only the beginning. The campaign required supply, engineering, armour, infantry and enormous civilian endurance across a densely inhabited region.
