The Bayeux War Cemetery is the largest Commonwealth Second World War cemetery in France. Thousands of graves include British and other Allied servicemen as well as some German burials. Across the road, the Bayeux Memorial names Commonwealth soldiers who died in Normandy and have no known grave.
Cemeteries change the scale of war history. Campaign maps show arrows and divisions; headstones restore individual age, regiment, religion and family inscription.
The site also demonstrates the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s consistent design principles: equal-sized stones and carefully maintained planting, intended to give different ranks equal treatment in death.
