Bamberg

Bamberg was deliberately promoted by Emperor Henry II, who founded its bishopric in 1007 and envisioned a major Christian centre within the Holy Roman Empire. Its ecclesiastical, princely and mercantile quarters survived the Second World War unusually well. This route connects imperial church politics to urban form and ends with a brewing tradition that is genuinely local without pretending beer explains the city.
