The row of former fishermen’s houses along the Regnitz is known as Klein Venedig — Little Venice. The comparison is modern tourism language; medieval residents were not waiting for gondolas.
The river supported fishing, transport and mills and shaped Bamberg’s working quarters. Nearby, the city’s market-gardener districts developed a distinctive agricultural economy on urban soils.
UNESCO’s value lies partly in this differentiated urban structure: ecclesiastical town, civic centre, gardeners and river workers.
That broader perspective prevents the cathedral from monopolising the city’s past.
Historic centres survive most convincingly when they include evidence of people who had to make things, grow things and move things — not just people entitled to commission ceilings.
