Barone Fortress was built alongside St John’s during the emergency of 1646. It was named after Baron Christoph Martin von Degenfeld, who played a leading role in organizing Šibenik’s defence against Ottoman attack.
The story is useful because it distinguishes command from construction. Local residents helped build the works, Venetian strategic interests framed the war, and an experienced foreign officer became the figure remembered in the fortress name.
Modern interpretation has turned the site into a place for exhibitions and events. The military landscape now explains a conflict that once justified restricting access to the same hill.
