Around the beginning of the twentieth century, Gödöllő became home to an artists’ colony associated with figures such as Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch and Sándor Nagy. Their work connected painting, craft, architecture and design with a search for a distinctly Hungarian visual culture.
They were influenced by the wider Arts and Crafts movement but looked to Hungarian folk traditions for patterns and ideals of integrated artistic life. This is a very different Gödöllő from the royal palace: not court culture imposed from above, but artists trying to reform modern life through handmade objects, community and design.
