Bécsi kapu means Vienna Gate, a name that reveals Győr’s orientation along the route toward the Habsburg capital. The surviving square took shape after the most dangerous frontier decades had passed, when defensive urgency could give way to Baroque civic display.
Churches and houses became more decorative, streets more regular, and the city projected confidence instead of siege readiness. Yet the name preserves the older transport logic: gates were filters for goods, travellers and information. Vienna was not an abstract political centre. It lay along the road beyond this edge of town.
