The Bishop’s Castle shows how church power and military defence overlapped. Its medieval tower was absorbed into a much larger frontier system when Habsburg engineers strengthened Győr against Ottoman expansion.
The official local heritage material also corrects some romantic stories about hidden treasure passages and secret escapes: archaeology gives us a more prosaic but stronger picture of changing defensive structures. Győr briefly fell to Ottoman forces in 1594 and was retaken in 1598. Afterward, its fortress remained a key element in the defence of Vienna’s approaches. The bishop lived inside a military landscape because in a frontier city there was no clean separation between sacred and strategic space.
