The Frigyláda, or Covenant Chest monument, commemorates an eighteenth-century religious scandal involving the Eucharist and a violent attempt to apprehend a fugitive. Rather than retelling every dramatic detail as legend, notice what the monument reveals about public religion.
In a Catholic Baroque city, sacrilege was understood not merely as private wrongdoing but as an injury to the community’s sacred order. Monumental atonement placed that concern permanently in public space. Today the story can seem strange because modern cities separate policing, religion and civic symbolism more sharply. Eighteenth-century Győr did not.
