Local legend says an iron rooster on the fortress would crow when Győr was retaken from the Ottomans. This is a legend, not an explanation of the actual 1598 operation. The real recapture depended on a surprise Habsburg assault and military planning.
The rooster survives because legends compress complicated events into memorable images. Győr’s inhabitants did not need to remember every tactical detail to understand the retaking as a foundational moment. By clearly separating legend from documented history, we can appreciate both: the military reality of a frontier fortress and the symbolic story the city chose to carry forward.
