Cifrapalota means roughly “ornate palace,” and the name is deserved. Built at the beginning of the twentieth century, it uses flowing surfaces, folk-inspired motifs and colourful ceramics associated with Hungarian Secession architecture.
The key point is not that the building looks whimsical. It shows a generation trying to create a modern national style without abandoning local visual traditions. Today it serves cultural purposes, but its facade still performs the optimism of a city expecting growth.
