The Great Church dominates Kecskemét’s skyline and represents the Catholic community of a town where several confessions built conspicuous institutions close together. Its late Baroque form belongs to the period when Great Plain settlements were consolidating after Ottoman rule.
A church of this scale required money, organisation and a stable population. It is therefore also evidence of economic recovery. Religious architecture here doubled as an urban confidence indicator.
