The former synagogue reflects the prominence of Kecskemét’s Jewish community in the nineteenth century, when merchants and professionals contributed substantially to the city’s economy and culture.

Emancipation created new opportunities, but that history ended in catastrophe during the Holocaust, when local Jews were persecuted and deported in 1944. The building’s later secular use cannot be separated from that rupture. It records both integration and violent exclusion.
