Bory Castle looks medieval from a distance, but it is a twentieth-century personal project. Architect and sculptor Jenő Bory spent decades expanding it as a home, studio, gallery and monument to his artistic world and family.
That makes it almost the opposite of the royal basilica. The basilica was a state institution whose building vanished; Bory Castle is one individual’s private attempt to make memory permanent through relentless building. Its towers, courtyards and sculptures mix historical references without pretending to be an authentic medieval fortress. Fehérvár ends here because Bory’s eccentric project captures the city’s larger theme: when the past is incomplete, people keep inventing new ways to live with it.
