Benedict Hill helps explain why Veszprém’s old centre formed where it did. The castle ridge rises above the winding Séd valley, giving natural defence but constraining movement.
From here the city’s geography becomes legible: steep slopes separate high political and religious ground from mills, roads and later neighbourhoods below. Local traditions connect the hill with early religious history, but the safer conclusion is topographical. Whoever controlled these heights controlled the most defensible core and the routes around it. The landscape was not background scenery; it was part of the city’s political technology.
