Stephen’s reign is associated with the Christian kingdom of Hungary; Gisela, born into the Bavarian ducal family, represents the international connections of that new monarchy. Veszprém’s later tradition as the city where bishops crowned queens made her especially useful to local identity. The statues are not medieval evidence. They are twentieth-century memory culture, showing how modern Hungarians chose to visualise the founding royal couple at a site already saturated with church and crown symbolism.
