Bartolomeo Colleoni was one of fifteenth-century Italy’s most successful condottieri: a professional military commander who served competing states, especially Venice. In the 1470s he commissioned this chapel as his mausoleum.
Giovanni Antonio Amadeo designed a façade of coloured marble, sculpture and geometric pattern that competes aggressively for attention beside Santa Maria Maggiore. That visual competition suits its patron. Colleoni’s career depended on converting military skill into wealth, status and political leverage.
The chapel is therefore not merely a Renaissance jewel. It is reputation management in stone. A man whose power came from warfare placed himself permanently beside one of Bergamo’s most important sacred buildings and made sure nobody could miss the entrance.
