Santa Maria Maggiore was founded in the twelfth century and became deeply connected with Bergamo’s civic identity. Unlike many churches, it lacks a dominant western façade facing a grand approach. Entrances open through richly carved side portals because later buildings crowded around it.
Inside, centuries of additions transformed the Romanesque shell with tapestries, stucco and Baroque decoration. The composer Gaetano Donizetti is buried here, linking the church to a much later chapter of Bergamo’s cultural history.
The building rewards resisting stylistic labels. Calling it Romanesque is true but incomplete. What visitors experience is accumulated patronage—medieval structure, Renaissance monuments, Baroque interior and nineteenth-century memory sharing one church.
