Plaošnik — PLAH-osh-neek — is associated with Saint Clement of Ohrid, disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius and one of the central figures in the spread of Slavic Christian literacy.
Clement arrived in the region in the late ninth century under the patronage of the Bulgarian ruler Boris I. Sources credit his school with educating large numbers of clergy and teachers.
A common popular claim says Clement “invented Cyrillic” here. That is not secure. The Glagolitic script belonged to Cyril and Methodius’s mission, while early Cyrillic is generally associated with the wider Bulgarian literary centres, especially Preslav.
Clement’s achievement does not need invention credit. Teaching, translation and institutional multiplication can reshape a culture more profoundly than a single eureka moment.
