Karol Scheibler’s Księży Młyn was designed as more than a mill. The official tourism portal describes a self-contained industrial settlement with a vast cotton factory, workers’ housing, school, fire station, hospitals, gasworks, shops and rail access. This concentration solved practical problems for the owner: labor lived close to machines, services were organized around production, and the company shaped daily life far beyond working hours. It could provide real amenities while also increasing dependence on the employer. That tension is central to industrial paternalism. Księży Młyn therefore lets you read capitalism spatially. Factory, housing, welfare and control were built into one coherent landscape.
